They were rather impressive monitors. For the price here they cannot be beat. They have some crystal clear, full-spectrum reproduction. What was most amazing was the highs. They have this sort of presence and air that no other monitor we ran them up against does. In comparison to most they sounded on the 'hi-fi' side to me, but I don't know how that translates to paper specs.
I should note that one of the monitor rooms we tried them in they sounded horrid. The reason being? The folks had them set up in a treated room, albeit a corner that bumped up the lows. All other tiny monitors sounded fine because that reinforced a region they lacked. The Opals absolutely muddied out until we set them to 1/4 wavelength mode. So if you have a small or untreated room, it would need some heavy bass trapping to get the very best out of these. They have some amazing low-extension.
Also, the transient reproduction is the best I've ever heard in a near-field. Snares would jump out and snap you in the face. I imagine this is due to the insane wattage.
The contest for me is between them and KH O300s, but if the O300s are still $3k more expensive then it doesn't remain much of one...
They've really packed a lot into a box of that size. They are disgustingly ugly but they bring the goods.
