I attended an AES meeting yesterday hosted at Studio D in Suasalito. I met and spoke with several people from Digidesign including Jim West who if remember correctly, manages the plug in development and new product deptartments. After having read this thread and many other related, I decided to ask some of the questions that seem to come up often.
The first thing I asked was wether or not they plan on withdrawing support for the mac in the near future. All four of them busted out laughing as all of them used mac at work and at home. They explained that it would never happen because a significant percentage of their users are on mac os and that it would not make sense to cut out a large part of their user base. The only thing they mentioned aside from that was how its taken more work to keep up with the updates and work out different bugs in osx.
The next thing I asked Jim West if there were any plans to make an 003. He eluded to the fact that there might be some R&D going on specifically on a new updated version of the 002. He explained that they are always working on new products, working out bugs, and trying to stay on top of the demand for new products. He was really interested in hearing what it was that I thought should be in an 003. I proceeded to explain to him what I felt the majority of people would like to see happen:
More inputs (I told him 16 plus 8 via lightpipe)
Higher track count in LE
Be able to use more than one interface at the same time.
Better converters (we all could agree on this one)
Stable clock
Metering on interface
Ability to use spdif and light pipe at the same time at 96 or above
A better look (how un sexy is that 002r?)
Thats about all I can remember (had a couple of glasses of wine while discussing all this) but at the time was all I could think to suggest. By the way it did take some restraint not to go off a little bit about all the BS digi seems heap out. I didn't want to shoot the messenger so to speak and if it made a difference that they were all pretty cool people. Anyway, hope some of you feel a little more at ease about the whole mac thing (I know I do. Just bought a dual 2.3) and maybe looking forward to the possibilty of that elusive 003!!!
