| Violet Designs The Globe Vintage 47 Review
Ok, after first purchasing the Violet The Globe Standard, which I was hoping it would be kind of like a BLUE Mouse for use on a bass cab. It turned out this mic was a lot different sounding (not in a bad way), and I ended up using it on guitar cabs. It excelled at this but it just didn't do it for me on a bass cab. It was pretty bright, but not in the right areas for a bass amp. I used it with a royer 121 and got killer guitar sounds though. The royer got all the meat and the globe mic got all the high end. The globe standard's capsule is supposedly based loosely off a U67 type capsule. It was cool but I didn't really need another mic for guitar amps. So I call Violet and talked to their US rep and tell him that I want to trade the globe standard with the globe vintage which has the exact same electronics but with a 47 type capsule. I drove out to his place and he set up the mic for me and also the standard which I brought with me and I got to A/B them. The vintage version of the globe was much warmer, not as bright and shrill in the high end. He also had a JZ-2 which is bascially the mouse. I A/B the vintage globe with that and they were very similar in the low end. The high end however was slightly different. The JZ-2/mouse was a little brigther. At first I couldn't tell the difference between the two just by talking into each. After spending some more time listening to each mic, the globe vintage actually had a warmer, more pleasing tone on my ear than the mouse/jz-2 type mic. It's also serial number #0047 thumbsup
I had the chance to track some bass with the new globe vintage version and it just sounded fantastic. It combined with a 57 on my Aguilar DB750 & Aguilar 4X12(monster bass amp by the way), and a A Designs REDDI was the most in your face, rock bass sound I've achieved. Much more fuller than the globe standard version. It had that u47 fet sound that I was looking for in the first place. I was feeling stupid for a bit that I purchased the other mic blindly and it sucked in the application I intended for it. Luckily it worked out on some other stuff. The guy at Violet was cool enough to let me trade it and thank god he did. If any of you guys need a new mic for recording bass, I'd check out the Globe Vintage by violet. Awesome sounding smooth, warm, whatever you wanna call it. The build quality is superior. He also showed me the inside of a Blue Blueberry that just came out.(not latvian made). It wasn't anywhere near the same as the older one, I didn't get to hear it, but i'd watch out for the new Blue stuff considering it's made differently than the mics Blue has put out that got them their reputation as a quality mic manufacturer. If anyone wants me to post some samples, let me know. It might take me a few days because I'm pretty busy. Take care.
