this is why you don't ever leave your gear in a van or in the venue itself unattended. if your touring you don't go off and party or see the sights, you take it on as a work situation and you're not there to have fun but to provide a performance and get the hell out of dodge when you're done performing and are loaded up again. if you have to stay overnight at a hotel you pick a motel type situation where you can park directly outside your room, or you only pick a hotel with secured parking.
any gigging musician should have insurance anyway, it's a minimal cost of around $400 a year for around a million dollars worth of theft and personal injury insurance if you hunt around.
and anyone who brings out a rare or valuable instrument live is begging for something to happen to it. theft is the least of your worries, most places have several drunks in them that like to do stupid shit like throw crap or spill crap. you don't need to have it stolen to have it dissapear, one idiot with a habit of throwing water from his bottle on a crowd can kill your item on stage if he's drunk enough. let alone a hick/punk venue where there's chicken wire around the stage for a reason and the crowd thinks it's funny to throw bottles at the wire to try to shock the players.
