You should have a look for some schematics of the classic units like AKG and of course a schematic of a guitar amp will schow you how to do a driver sircuit too.
There are tube and solidstate drivers in diverent guitar amps.
You could build it with or with out the tone stack.
Heck even add a simple graphic eq to tweak the input signal!
