Hundreds of options and opinions. Don't cup the mic. (Except for quickie feedback checking live on stage) If it's a handheld (ala SM58), get 4 to 6 inches away pointing straight on to start, then 'work' the mic from a bit closer for soft passages (or guttural rap/hardcore scream) to as much as arms' length for louder parts. A good vocalist SHOULD know this. If it's mounted, the proximity effect can be lessened by singing a bit off-axis, that is, not straight into the mic. But you'll lose presence, so practice.
