I remember talking to Doug during the Mr. Bulbous era (seemed like they were tuning down another half step on each album they put out). He said that they tried switching string gauges -- (they were 9's on gtr and 40-95 on bass) and it really, really just didn't sound as right.
Thin picks & strings can sound SUPER heavy -- the touch required is a lot different, though. Y'know, it's just that "some is good, more is better" mentality that f&^ks with people sometimes...
