The R16 preamps are Allen&Heath's top of the line preamps. I don't know if this is true about the rest of the Zed family.
I bought an R16 recently and it makes the yamaha preamps sound... well puny. Don't get me wrong I like yamaha. But it's the typical difference between a British sound and a Japanese sound.
The Eq on the Zed is much more colorful than anything in the price range. It's set up almost exactly like the soundcraft ghost, but I personally think it sounds much better. (probably because it's newer)
