A LOT of art might have been paid for, but it wasn't always the artist who received the compensation, or if it was even paid for in the artist's lifetime.

True artists do what they do, because it's what they do. Things like passion, dedication and not wavering from their artistic path separates them from the herd.
I'm not saying they shouldn't be compensated, quite the opposite, but the greats do it regardless of compensation.......one way or the other. |
