You seem to be missing the fact that it is the owners (or license holders) of the property that get paid for a sale. If you sign the rights for your work over to someone else then it becomes theirs by the terms of your contract.
You do not have to sign your work over to a record company or a publishing company. You can give it away free if you want. This does not mean that you can steal those artists work who have decided to sign with a record or publishing company, or who have decided to sell it themselves.
