This is actually a very controversial topic, fairly hotly debated by even experts in acoustics and acoustic treatment. I would tend to land on the side you're both landing on; that the difference in surface composition would alter the total coefficient for the room, which would result in an audible difference. Others disagree.

I say all of this to simply make the point that it may not be as simple as we all think.
