Just putting wood up on a surface doesn't make it into a low-frequency-absorbing resonant panel. Yes, the panel will reflect/absorb frequencies in a specific nature, but wood alone does not comprise a bass-trapping mechanism (although its commonly used in those implementations).

If anything, the way wood reflects sound is "flatter" in response than a lot of other building materials (not to say the reflection off wood is flat from 20 to 20K obviously), so its often a great choice (plus it looks good!)
