It may be a dongle, or it may be a vital part of the DSP chain. They say that the DSP load is "split" between the host and the card, so unless we have access to the inner technical workings of the software driver, we can only guess as to the real function of the Duende hardware with the V3 driver. I do not own an iLok, will probably have to buy one when I purchase DigiDesign Complete Production Toolkit, but if it weren't for that, I would normally seriously attempt to stay away from iLok if there was an alternative solution that didn't use it. I don't feel that it really curbs copy protection that much anyways and is more of a nuisance than of value.
