There ain't no "world's best" microphone. Think of microphones as colors. Is there a world's best color?

The art of using microphones involves, among other things, choosing the right mic for each source. And even if your source is only Vocals, different singers sound better on different mics. The most expensive mic in the world might sound like *dog doo* on the wrong singer. And some great vocal tracks have been recorded on mics that cost less than $75.

When I began serious recording, I tried out about thirty different quality mics searching for what sounded best on my voice. After a while, I sold my $3000 mic, even though it sounded wonderful, because I was happier with the sound I was getting from a couple different mics that cost around $400.

You are off to a fairly good start with the U-87 and AKG 414. Instead of spending a ton on one expensive mic (unless you can try it out first and prove beyond a doubt that it is the perfect mic for you) you are better off buying a small assortment of quality inexpensive mics, such as the Audio-Technica 4047 and 4050, the Shure SM7-B, maybe a BLUE Blueberry, etc. (Those are all great Vocal mics -- if you want a mic for other sources, there may be more appropriate choices.)
