What was the synth like when you tried it out? What did you not like about it? It's unstable? What happened to make you think this?
I am somewhat interested in the MPC5000, I've heard good and bad about it but I'm not one to bash something I've never tried.
To the OP: IMHO an MPC1000 with the JJos is the best bang for the buck. If you are interested in the 5000 by all means go try one out. The interface looks really nice, I bet it's not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
There are a lot of negative reviews on the web for gear that the naysayers have never actually touched. The Alesis Fusion is a good example of a great product that was killed in internet forums by people who never even used the thing.... of course you can buy one now for $600 because of these people.... so I guess that can be a good thing.
