VGA cables should be fine, DVI i dont know but those are expensive anyway.
If you use USB no cable should be longer than 5 meters (16 feet?). You could get a USB-hub with it's own power supply and connect stuff from that. Even an external dvd-drive.
I also use ADAT cables ... at the speed of light ,
