I just measured out and marked where I wanted the gaps on the wood, leaving enough material between each to retain some structure. I used a hole saw of the appropriate size at either end of the sections to be removed, then connected each pair with a jigsaw. This allowed me to create a finished rounded edge to each section quickly, and more accurately than I would have cut by hand with the jigsaw.
