A good mix engineer can inject some energy into a mix, but you gotta have something there for him to work with. If you're not naturally getting exciting-sounding mixes (not necessarily good-sounding, though), you just don't have it. Nailing a vibe in a mix is, IME/O, one of those things where you either got it or you don't. You can learn to clear out all the mud, maximize clarity, and place everything perfectly, but if it ain't exciting, what difference does it make?
Start with better material, finish with better production (including the tracking, mixing, and mastering). Don't try to do it all yourself, and don't think you hafta be able to do it all; most folks can't.
