Question on how to route Digital Audio from on board mobo sound to Mbox2

I have an Abit IP35 motherboard. It has a Realtek HD Audio chip on it (not sure which number). It has S/PDIF optical out. I'd like to take that output and send it to my mbox2 (which is S/PDIF coaxal).

Can I do that with a simple cable, or would I need some kind of conversion box?

P.S. Purpose of this is to output all my pc audio through my monitor speakers. Some programs just won't recognize the mbox driver as an output option, even if its the default (or only) selection in sound properties in the Control Panel.

Thanks!
