The mic could very well be broken as the SA538 and SA583B are knock outs in this price category and sound 'more expensive' than they are IME. Failing tubes or shifted capsules from rough shipping are some common culprits that still allow the mic to work but only give you a partial of how it's supposed to sound. A higher end NOS tube does give it a bit more magic too if needed.
