I strongly disagree with this. and whats more I feel musicianship is a bigger factor. I record bands daily, and I can count one one hand the number players that come in that I consider "great", and the rest range from "barely adequate" to "give up and please go away"
great recordings come from great performances (playing) or new cool ideas(inspiration but not necessarily playing), and those two are indeed rare round here these days.
