Console automation:

Muting channels to deal with the noise floor (from inserted outboard) can be lowered when signal isn't being passed;

Compressed sound stays constant even when working the levels on the board;

Easier tactical control of certain parts on a physical layout as compared to on a screen (ICON / controller users excepted);

etc...
for me, doing all my rides ITB then feeding them to channel strips with inserts would be somewhat of a hassle and requires different routing to accomplish successfully (would you want to be riding the amount of signal you're feeding to an unautomated hardware compressor?) Maybe this is a new secret technique i'm unaware of.

thats just my take. so yes, setting up extra aux tracks in PT and rerouting the audio back into PT so my rides would be POST console inserts would be a hassle and vibe killer for me. but then again i dont work on a console everyday so what do i know.

If you console has hui mode you could write your fader moves to a PT track. most of the older consoles have there own automation system however.
