I try to benefit from the way a console/mix can sound when being hit at a certain level. Some consoles have a huge sonic swing depending on how you hit the line amps (or transformers). Just because an element is low in the mix doesn't mean it can't benefit from good gain staging. It's about the headroom, noise and overall sound of the particular console.
