If I'm doing mail-in mixes (which I've been getting quite busy with lately), and there's a strong chance I'll need to do a recall and/or printing stems won't fully cover my ass, I'll set the faders on the desk to unity and mix inside PT. If I need to do some post-insert fader rides, I'll use a PT Hardware Insert as needed.
Generally, though, I mix using the faders on the board, with PT for automation moves. I like to start by setting the faders on the desk at -5, get a quick rough balance happening in PT using PT faders, then mix on the desk from there.
