An MDF base with timber buildings should be fine, as obviously you want reflection and not absorbtion. The MDF only needs to be thick enough to provide structural support for the timber and fixings, so dont go overboard on the thickness otherwise the whole thing will be too heavy to hang easily. Standard 18 mil MDF will be fine, and stronger than you need even. Roofing battens are cheaper than 2x2 timber lengths, and would be fine for cutting into lengths for making the ass buildings, so that could be cheaper than using other timber lengths. They're 2x1 so if you wanted the building ends to look square you'd have to fix two side by side to make 2x2 ends. Good luck, post some pics when youre done
