If you're using file extensions.. then you're not naming the files the same name -- they're different (duh).

OS X *always* uses extensions. files are written to the directory with an extension. It's a user option to hide them or not. Thus, even with extensions off, you can have session.doc, session.pts, session.jpg, session.fuk, etc.etc.
