Was it an mp3 or other lossy data compressed format? What you heard could well be very common artefacts of that, and once spotted you can often hear it in the full mix.
Aside from that, yeah mono can be great and many of the best records ever made are largely mono, with side elements for contrast and emphasis. After all, what appears louder - a sound coming from one speaker or two? Hence double tracking & panning rock guitars, for example, works so well.
