I have done it several times. If your good enough playing the instruments you know it will work out. Though, the times I`ve done it I found it to get too monotone. You can really hear the same timing and so on.... But I`ve found a technique. I listen to an artist that I like on their instrument and implement it to the production I`m working with at the moment and try to copy it in some ways. Then it works fine...
