I always thought Pantera were masters of dynamics in their genre as were VH. You could feel the emotion as it peaked it was all 3 players competing but blending. Taking you to a place or different places throughout a track. As much as I hate Nirvava a track like 'In Bloom' was pretty cool dynamically. He took you down and brought you back up . My favorite dynamic track might be 'Times of Trouble' by Temple of the Dog. Holy shiat. Don't get much better than that! Cornell we know is king but his vocals on that song are just on another level in translating emotion to tape. He did that Again on 'Fell on Black Days'. Genius......
Another track that stands out in my mind is Slow and Easy by Whitesnake. Cozy Powell is just insane on that as is David Coverdale. Dymanics o nthat songs are superb.
Lets face it , until the overuse of compression in late 70's and beyond, the dynamics as you are asking were common place in all music. Compression ruined dynamics. Now you have misuse of comp and limiting. In the 80's it was just compression now it's both. Not to say you can't be dynamic with compression but when you squash everything 10:1 it makes it tougher.
All Classical music is pretty much up and down dynamically speaking. |
