They had issues with the magnetic field from the neck pickup on the Sabres dampening down the string vibrations - at least according to Sterling Ball. However, this year Ernie Ball started releasing stingrays with two humbuckers for the first time ever. They sound about as close to the original sabre as the modernised EB stingray sounds compared to the original.

Very cool basses also - I've been curious to try the L1505 for a while but no opportunity yet. Also tried an Asat which was definitely a power players instrument :)
