I'm sorry, but how is it different than recording any other line level signal?

Assign the track you wish to record to its own output on your interface, connect this to the input of your outboard, connect the outboard's output to a line input on your interface.

Then create a new track, assign it the input you just plugged into, arm the track and press record. The track will play, output to the compressor, and return into this now-recording input. You might have a little latency you need to watch out for.

I can't think why this wouldn't be working for you...
