a GOOD mic stand to do what he's trying to do start at $200. Starbird and similar - I know exactly the set up he's after.
A moderate priced cymbal stand WILL be sturdier - you could easily get a decent braced stand for $70. Then he'd need a clamp attachment to fix the mic holder to - that'd cost another $60 ish or more. Might as well get a immitation starbird!!
Studiospares in th UK have them - wouldnt know about the USA.
