Sorry to hear that you're encountering difficulties with your AD/DA16X setup. Indeed you should be able to boot Pro Tools with only the AD16X connected. Here are a few steps to try. I'll assume that you're using a Digi-qualified system, i.e. no OSX Tiger. By the way, we've tested our interfaces successfully with Pro Tools 6.9.
1) Verify that firmware has been updated to at least version 1.38. Power down the AD16X, hold down the PREV button, and power up the unit; the version number is displayed in the Sample Rate display.
2)Verify that you're connected a Digilink cable from the Digidesign Core PCI card to the X-HD card's Primary port. The primary port on the X-HD is to the left (looking at the BACK of the AD16X) unlke a 192.
3) If you're still encountering dificulties, you may want to inspect how the card was installed, and verify that the X-HD's mating pins are fully inserted into the AD16X's connector.
