Most DVD-A discs play on DVD-V players (the Dolby Digital 5.1 track), so go ahead and get DVD-A discs if you want them. DTS has some Surround CDs still available, but very few DVD-V music-only discs are around.
What kind of music are you thinking of? For rock, Beck Sea Change is a great surround mix, the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi is very adventurous, and Fleetwood Mac Rumours is probably one of the best balanced (front-to-back, center channel use, etc.). Diana Krall has a couple of great surround SA-CDs for jazz, and Telarc's classical SA-CDs are consistently reliable.
