You're close... Its the past, the present, and the future...
When the software we are using right now becomes outdated or obsolete sometime later dudes will still be programing beats with the same old hardware or running their sounds through certain hardware pieces to improve its sonic flavour. Overall, hardware is a better long term investment IMO. If all you see when you look at a MPC is a hardware sampler, you are probably better off sticking with what you got anyway.
