Make sure that you turn off wireless networking and disable 1394 networking
Also make sure you have installed the microsoft 1394 patch. Seems that many XP SP2 machines have their 1394 set to S100 100MHz instead of S400 400MHz. The patch will properly reset firewire to it's full bandwidth..
