Yep - i think mic placement (or getting another mic as well that picks up a touch more low end) will be the answer - maybe decide which voice is the most important and mic the less important ones a little further back - give them some natural air and make them less in your face.

Everything is very clear at the moment, but no single instrument is the most important and that confuses my petty little brain a bit

Once you fill out the low end with that acoustic bass it'll start sounding much nicer.
