One additional thought....
Thru the years I've found that if you have a great player, and a great instrument, you can mic it with almost (I did say almost....

) anything and it will sound good, if not great.
When you REALLY need to know your mics and placement are when the drummer shows up with dead heads, poor technique and a cheapo set. You may not get great, but your mic choice will DEFINATELY make a big difference.
What we have here is a superb kit, brand new heads, and a drummer that knows how to tune them and how to play them.
That may be what is contributing to some of your thoughts that the mics are not a different sounding as you suspected...
Either that or you need to get your monitoring together!!!!!
