Check out Yamaha Rydeens or Stage Customs. They're made of Phillipine Mahogany (soft, stringy hardwood), the SCs having an inner ply of something better IIRC. They definitely have a vintage vibe going on. You can pick up a set for under $500.
If buying used, always budget for having bearing edges redone. Softer wood edges and sticktips don't mix.
