As I understand it the 1089 is identical to a 1073 with the exception of the line (not mic) gain section of the gain switch. Where one will go up in gain with a clockwise rotation the other goes down in gain. I've heard they were a special accomodation for broadcast consoles purchased by a major organization in Spain.
I'm not an authority like Geoff Tanner but I do own a pair of 1089s and that's the story as I know it.
Or, if you're a wiseass, the difference is 16.
