I have a '52 J-45 with a nice big (properly repaired) crack running down the center of the length of the back. Sounds amazing. Seems lots of them from this year have the crack. The conventional wisdom is that a Gibson gives you a blend of voices whereas a Martin gives you a pure single tone.
