Yes, like tape it becomes more saturated the harder you hit it.
Transformers normally were used to convert balanced to unbalanced and vise versa. They were never intended to be a color device, that was a happy accident.
The design of this unit is specifically for the tape sound, you don't need transformers for that, even though the tape machines that were modeled did have transformers in them....
