The laptop is a 900-Mhz Toshiba, perfectly enough for multitrack recordings. The 19-inch-PC is an old overclocked Celeron... (600@900). I rarely use it these days, but it served me well for quite a number of years.

Hey d_fu.
I'm looking into laptops for a mobile rig and after looking at all the issues with core2duo and firewire etc I've been considering an older laptop for audio use only.
How many tracks can your Toshiba cope with? I'd be running a multiface over pcmcia cardbus (the later version), and would possibly want to upgrade to a digiface later on.
I'd either run XP with Sonar or Reaper, or possibly Linux using Ardour DAW.
I cant see me needing to record over 24 tracks at 24bit/44.1kHz - if it gets to that point i'd probably upgrade the laptop anyway. I'd imagine my "usual" track count would be either 2 - 4 at 24/96, or 8 - 16 at 24/44.1
What size/speed is the hard drive and what sort of track counts can it manage?
I have an old Dell Latitiude which I could use. Its PIII-m 1ghz with a 30gb Hdd. Unfortunately only USB1 so no chance of using an external drive to record to.
If you could give me a little more info on how your system performs I'd really appreciate it. Also, what DAW do you use?
Thanks in advance for the help,
Gareth
