if you want the samples to have less impact throw on a compressor with a fast attack time and a slower release. Obviously you gotta find the magic times as per sample. Start with the ratio low and use your ears. When it fits in with all the other sounds you have going on its good. You can also throw a shelf EQ on the high end to dull it up. good luck
