You are correct in every syllable.
I won't disclose the 1176 'personal calibration'
(have fun finding one of your own).
I would also add that I first heard the re issue at an AES (San Fran I think). On headphones, in a booth with a source I didn't 'know' I was not impressed, but I didn't judge it there.
The person demonstrating/showing the unit volunteered the following: (as memory serves. not verbatim)
I actually found my Fathers notes he made during the development of the 1176, we tracked down original suppliers where possible, and had custom parts built if we had too. His notes on nearly every page ended with "still can't get the 'ringing' out of the transformer" and they manufactured them all like that. WE FIXED IT!" .

I think Digital has 'fixed' the problem with analogue too!
"Tone be gone damn you!"

Richard, my studio partner is going to want to kiss you for that one!

It's driven him crazy for a long time - he had a previous partner who had a rev A 1176 and it sounded better than another one which had been refurbed by UA at one point and couldn't figure out what it is - he said there was something going on with that un-"fixed" one that sounded much cooler - a little more "noisey" but it was worth it for the great sound. That would definitely explain it!

Interestingly enough, both our rev B's are purported to sound sound slightly "noisier" (in hi-fi terms) compared to the rev D's and afterwards but there a certain "tone" to them the later ones just can't touch imo.
