Wakena2003,

My recommendation is to get the "Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" DVD, which is a documentary (rockumentary/mockumentary) of the recording and subsequent touring of the "Black" album.

It (mostly) shows a lot of the guitars, drums, basses, etc used for songs, and you can occasionally get a glimpse of mics and outboard gear used both in tracking and mixdown. For instance, you can quite easily see Lars' snare miked with a 57 and a Neumann KM-86, and his hi-hat miked with a SM7.

Not only that, you may end up pissing your pants with laughter about every six minutes or so. I did.
