I don't know...the SSL bundle has been out for about two and a half years now...it's not like they announced this the day after everyone's WUP expired...and it's not like they haven't released new products fairly regularly since then...

Well, if you already own the SSL bundle and have had it for more than a year then yes, you do have to pay for the upgrade...but it's (now) at a fairly reasonable upgrade price, and you're getting a few new features for the software overall in addition to the new plugins...and those new features address most of the complaints peopl have have had about Waves's upgrade policy over the past few years...
And no, you can't buy iLok insurance at iLok.com.
