I don't know if this is a common practice or if helpful to what your asking, but a few years back someone gave me a DAT full of sampled snare hits. When I asked where all the samples came from. I was told from popular songs people listen to everyday. Before then I never thought of taking that approach. Since then from time to time I would listen through current and past songs for snare hits to use. If you feel guilty about the whole process. You can do as I do and just have another snare hit mixed underneath the sampled snare hit or vice versa.

Sorry it wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but the snare your ear wants to hear might be on an album you may own. I hope what I typed made any sense if any.
