Your story isn't so bad at all...I wouldn't be surprised that the guy there wouldn't know anything about a product they don't even stock...seems like a reasonable way to handle things.
Still, I would have gone elsewhere to a stocking dealer myself. Enjoy your new equipment...I have a pair of R121 microphones and API preamps myself and they get along very well together...
