Hi, I'm not Sam, (I'm shorter) but 2 reasons for grouping the whole mix to a master that I do are 1)as you mentioned, rides, particularly level up in the choruses 2) the SSL mixbuss/stereo compressor combo sounds different depending on how hard you are hitting the mixbuss and what you are doing with comp makeup gain. Having the whole mix grouped makes it easy to adjust the way you are hitting the mixbuss and comp, thereby altering the tone of the mix. Also good if you got a little lazy setting up and are cramming too much into the buss.
